    1.6 ECOTEC: Cam-phase meets drivers’ needs

    The new 1.6 ECOTEC with 85 kW/115 hp offers improved elasticity and smoothness compared to the 1.6-liter engine with 77 kW/105 hp (10 percent more output as well as around three percent less consumption). The improved torque curve is especially noticeable during driving, peaking at 155 Nm and available across a wide rpm range. This translates into powerful propulsion power even at low rpm. With this new engine, the Astra GTC accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 11.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 193 km/h.

    The advantages of the new 114 kilogram four-cylinder, four-valve engine, which has a power-to-weight ratio of 0.99 kg/hp, are based primarily on “Cam-Phase” technology. This involves continuous variable valve timings via intake and exhaust camshafts that are adjustable to the driving situation. Both camshafts are controlled seamlessly and independently from one other by engine management in real time, with two compact, vane-type hydraulic adjusters controlling the timing. This allows the intake and exhaust valve timings, and therefore also the engine characteristic, to be more spontaneous and better match each power and performance requirement, which the driver “defines” via the accelerator pedal and gear change.

    The simple and yet so effective TWINPORT concept, which was introduced by Opel into all gasoline engines with up to 1.6 liters displacement in 2003, was furthered developed with the 115 hp 1.6-liter engine. Its cylinder head has two separate intake ports per cylinder, just like the 1.6 TWINPORT. While until now manifold flaps were required to ensure stable and consistent combustion, the 1.6 ECOTEC functions without these flaps in its new, two-stage, variable length, plastic intake pipe. This is thanks to the optimized inlet port alignment in combination with cam-phase. The dethrottled gas exchange improves fuel efficiency: the 115 hp GTC and five-door Astra require only an average of 6.3 liters of super unleaded gasoline per 100 kilometers when fitted with the five-speed Easytronic transmission.

    The high rates of exhaust gas recirculation, a pre-requisite for reduced emissions, are typical of TWINPORT engines. Over one quarter of the cylinder charge during partial load comes from previously combusted fuel. Instead of the additional external line, an even more efficient internal recirculation system is in use. This enables the hot and combustible exhaust gases to be directly recycled within the cylinder head.

    For the first time in this engine class, Opel also uses laser-structured cylinder barrels in the 1.6 ECOTEC. The exactly defined, minute recesses are etched during a special production stage, and act as a micro pressure chamber system. This leads to minimized piston friction and has a positive effect on abrasion, fuel and oil consumption. Other technological highlights of the high-tech engine include the map-controlled thermostat and new, low-drawn exhaust manifold with integrated catalytic converter.

    am si eu 2 intrebari despre motorul nou de 115 cp:

     

    1. are curea de distributie pe lant ca la 1.4 sau nu (adica la fel ca la 1.6 105cp) ?

    2. se mai aude tacanitul acela specific twinport la plecarea de pe loc ?

    La 2 raspunsul e nu. Zgomotul facut de versiunea asta de motor e foarte diferit de twinport dupa parerea mea.

    Are cineva mai multe informatii despre acest motor (1.6 Turbo)? In afara de faptul ca este VVT (oare ?)....banuiesc ca este si cu injectie directa de benzina .

    The new weight-optimized 1.6 ECOTEC (85 kW/115 hp) with a variable camshaft joins the bestselling 1.6-liter TWINPORT engine (77 kW/105 hp). With the 115 hp engine coupled to a five-speed Easytronic transmission, the Astra needs only 6.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. Continuous variable control of both camshafts is the main reason for the performance benefits. With this “Cam-Phase” system, valve timing can be varied depending on the speed and load range of the four-valve unit for optimal performance or consumption.The new 1.6-liter turbo engine (132 kW/180 hp), which replaces the 2.0-liter turbo with 125 kW/170 hp and comes with a six-speed transmission as standard, boasts an even greater reduction in consumption. Compared with its predecessor, total consumption is reduced by more than 13 percent to 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

     

     

    The completely newly-developed 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo ECOTEC engine with 132 kW/180 hp ensures superior performance and is currently the most powerful production turbo unit in its displacement class. The 1.6-liter ECOTEC’s maximum torque of 230 Nm is available in a wide band from 2200 to 5500 rpm. Along with the six-speed manual gearbox and sport chassis, this forms the basis for the minivans´s exciting drive. The Meriva OPC accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and has a top speed of 222 km/h. The state-of-the-art 1.6-liter engine weighs only 131 kilograms and produces 112.5 hp per liter. The technical highlights include a fast-reacting water-cooled turbocharger integrated in the exhaust manifold, air-cooled intercooler, sodium-cooled exhaust valves, oil-spray cooling of the pistons, a reinforced crankshaft and friction-reduced drive of the 16-valve unit’s camshafts. An additional primary catalytic converter close to the engine ensures rapid exhaust-gas treatment after starting the vehicle.

     
    “Overboost” also enhances active safety

     A special feature of the new engine also enhances active safety: the turbocharger’s electronically-controlled overboost function can temporarily increase torque by 36 Nm to 266 Nm on demand – an increase of around 15 percent. The need for additional power is determined by the electronics system based on the speed with which the gas pedal is applied. The extra power is available for a maximum of five seconds; thereafter the control unit seamlessly regulates the torque back to its standard level of 230 Nm. The overboost function aids drivers in various situations, for instance in overtaking vehicles more quickly and thus more safely.

    In afara de -completely newly-developed -tot nu se spune ce fel de injectie are .Angry 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo ECOTEC engine with 132 kW/180 hp is currently the most powerful production turbo unit in its displacement class.De parca motorul  VW 1.4-litri TSI Twincharger -170 CP nu le-ar sta in coasta.

    Cel putin 3 tehnologii ale noului motor 1.6 Turbo .apartin de fapt lui BorgWarner Turbo ,respectiv  1- Special design solutions such as the integrated exhaust manifold 2- eBooster™ 3-Water-cooled bearing housings . Si probabil 1.9 cdti va lua pe el  - BorgWarner Turbo Systems regulated 2-stage turbocharging.

    Iata acum si pe romaneste ca poate sunt obositi oamenii sa mai traduca din engleza :) 1.6 Ecotec Noul 1.6 Ecotec, genereaza 115CP, este cu 10% mai puternic decat precedentul motor de 1.6 litri de 105 CP si are un consum cu 3% mai mic. Acest motor genereaza un cuplu motor maxim de 155 Nm, disponibili intr-un interval mare de rpm. Echipat cu acest motor Astra GTC accelereaza de la 0 la 100 km/ora in 11.6 secunde si atinge o viteza maxima de 193 km/ora. 1.6 Ecotec cantareste 114 kg, are patru cilindrii, patru valve si un raport greutate/putere de 0.99kg/CP. Echipat cu o cutie de viteze Easytronic cu cinci trepte noul Astra de 115 CP consuma numai 6.3 litri de combustibil la 100 km. 1.6 Ecotec Turbo Ecotec 1.6 Turbo este inacelasi timp performant si economic. Acesta genereaza 180 CP si vine sa inlocuiasca motorul de 2.0 litri Turbo care genera 170 CP. Motorul este mai usor decat predecesorul si consuma, in medie, numai 7.7 litri la 100 km. Cu acest propulsor Astra GTC accelereaza de la 0 la 100 km/ora in 8.2 secunde si atinge viteza maxima de 223 km/ora. In viteza a cincea GTC accelereaza de la 80 la 120 km/ora in numai 8.4 secunde. Cuplul motor maxim generat de acest motor este de 230 Nm, disponibil constant intre 1.980 si 5.500 rpm. Comparativ cu modelul anterior, consuma cu 1.3 litri mai putin la 100 km, transpus in procente inseamna o scadere cu 13% a consumului. Un element special al acestui motor este functia de "overboost" a turbochargerului. Aceasta permite o crestere rapida a cuplului motor la 266 Nm. Aceasta forta aditionala este disponibila pentru maxim cinci secunde, dupa care unitatea electronica de control reduce constant cuplul motor pana la valoarea normala de 230 Nm. Aceasta functie ajuta soferul sa efectueze rapid si in siguranta manevre de depasire.

    Ar fi interesant sa auzim si de la niste posesori de motor 1.6 ecotec 115 hp cam care este comportamentul in trafic al motorului si consumul in oras. Si 1.6 twinport consuma decent si chiar putin afara dar in oras consuma destul de mult. Eram interesat daca au mai redus consumul pentru ca aia cu 6.3 in regim mixt mi se pare SF.
